Puffin Experience
Join us for a magical experience on Runde, where land meets the vast Atlantic Ocean. On this evening excursion to the bird cliffs, you will come close to the famous Atlantic puffin. Our nature guide will give you insight into the remarkable lives of seabirds, share stories from the island’s local history, and tell the fascinating story of the real gold treasure from the shipwreck of Akerendam, which sank off Runde in 1725.
The experience begins at Runde Environmental Centre with a screening of “Silver of the Sea”, a captivating nature documentary about the puffins and the enormous herring spawning along the coast of Møre. Before visiting the exhibition at the centre, you will be served a delicious fish soup with freshly baked bread. With full stomachs and the story of the “Silver of the Sea” in mind, our experienced nature guide will take you through the exhibition. Here you will learn about the different seabirds that live on the island, and we will explore what is happening to birdlife on Runde today. Before setting out on the hike, we take a golden journey back to 1725, when a large merchant ship ran aground off Runde – and nearly 300 years later its wreck was discovered by three divers.
The hike to the bird cliffs takes about 45 minutes, reaching a highest point of around 200 metres above sea level. After a short and steep initial climb, the terrain levels out and the rest of the walk continues on a gentle incline. Along the way there is much to see, and the nature guide will lead you to the best viewpoints so you can get the most out of the experience and learn even more about the area.
At the bird cliffs there will be plenty of time to enjoy the view, the sunset, and the puffins swooping overhead. You will almost certainly leave with a deeper understanding of Runde, its seabirds, and the ocean that surrounds us.
